Bishop Serratelli's Statement on his appointment as Seventh Bishop of Paterson
Many challenges face us at the present:
- The challenge to preach the gospel dearly yet compassionately
- The challenge to strengthen family life in our society
- The challenge to stir up vocations among the young so that we have more good priests and religious to serve in parishes and in the needed apostolates of education and charity
- The very real challenge today to remain joyful even in trial
In a word, to be faithful to the Lord Jesus in our time and day.
On a personal note, I have been privileged as student and teacher, to travel often from the shores of Tiberias to the banks of the Tiber.
Again and again I was reminded how the Catholic Church has moved from prayer shawl to pallium, from the catacombs to the cathedral and has remained year after year ever young and vital.
And now I am most happy at the call of our Holy Father Pope John Paul II - to whom I am deeply grateful for the trust he places in me - I am most happy to make my home along the banks of the Passaic and to give my heart and life to this Bride of Christ, the Church of Paterson.
