Bishop to celebrate Jubilee Mass June 6
RANDOLPH - Bishop Serratelli will be the principal celebrant for the annual diocesan jubilee Mass for diocesan and religious priests serving within the Paterson Diocese at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 6 in St. Matthew Church here. The Jubilee Mass honors those priests celebrating their 65th, 60th, 50th, 40th, and 25th anniversaries of priestly ordination this year. A list of jubilarians follows:
65th Anniversary
Msgr. Ladislaus J. Flek
Msgr. Ladislaus J. Flek, a native
of Passaic, was ordained June 7, 1941 in St. John Cathedral, Paterson, by Bishop
Thomas H. McLauglin and celebrated his first Solemn Mass the next day at the
same altar in St. Joseph, Passaic, where he had served as an altar boy for many
years. His first assignment was at Holy Rosary Parish, Passaic. After six
months, he was assigned to St. Anthony Parish, Hawthorne, where he remained for
12 years until July 1954 when he became pastor of St. Simon the Apostle, Green
Pond, and St. Thomas the Apostle, Oak Ridge. In September, 1961, Msgr. Flek was
assigned to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Boonton. In 1969, he returned to his home
parish as pastor at St. Joseph. He was appointed a Prelate of Honor to His
Holiness with the title of monsignor on Jan. 7, 1981. Msgr. Flek has been
involved in such community projects as the United Passaic Organization and has
had special concern for the sick and elderly and newcomers from Poland. Msgr.
Flek retired in 1993. He currently resides in Totowa.
60th Anniversary
Franciscan Father Thomas J. Fox
Franciscan Father Thomas
J. Fox, a New York native, has been a resident at Holy Name Friary, Ringwood
since 2003. He was ordained in Washington on June 9, 1946. He entered the
Franciscans' Holy Name Province at St. Bonaventure Monastery, Paterson, in 1940.
His priestly studies were at St. Joseph Seminary, Callicoon, N.Y.; St. Stephen,
Croghan, N.Y.; St. Anthony Monastery, Butler; and Holy Name College in
Washington. His priestly assignments included: St. Joseph, Winsted, Conn.; St.
Anthony, Butler; and overseas assignments in Brazil, where his last assignment
was before his retirement in 2003.
Franciscan Father Henry Madden
Franciscan Father Henry
Madden, a resident of Holy Name Friary, Ringwood since 2005, is a native of
Brooklyn, N.Y. His priestly studies were at St. Joseph Seminary, Callicoon, N.Y.
and Holy Name College in Washington. He entered the Franciscan's Holy Name
Province at St. Bonaventure Monastery, Paterson, in 1940. He was ordained June
9, 1946. His assignments included: St. Anthony Shrine, Boston; Holy Cross, the
Bronx, N.Y.; St. Mary, Americus, Ga.; St. Francis, New York City; Siena College,
Loudonville, N.Y.; as well as in Fair Lawn, Paterson, and Allegany, N.Y. He
retired to St. Anthony's in Butler in 2005.
Father Francis Maliszewski
Father Francis Maliszewski,
born in Poland, was ordained in Warsaw on March 16, 1946. In his native country,
he served in Sloniczyn, Warsaw and Tazczyn. In 1963, Father Maliszewski came to
the U.S. to work among Polish immigrants. He arrived in Paterson and was
assigned to St. Stephen Parish, Paterson. Although Father Maliszewski officially
retired in 1982, he still resides in Paterson at St. Stephen's. He is often in
the confessional and at the altar performing priestly duties not only among the
Polish community, but the English and Spanish speaking communities as well.
Franciscan Father Quentin A. Neyland
Franciscan Father
Quentin A. Neyland of St. Anthony Friary, Butler, was ordained June 9, 1946. He
entered the Franciscans Friars in 1940 and attended St. Joseph Seminary,
Callicoon, N.Y. He completed his philosophy studies at Croghan, N.Y. and St.
Anthony Monastery, Butler, and his theological studies at Holy Name College,
Washington. His first assignment was at St. Anthony Shrine, Boston. His other
priestly assignments included: Our Lady Queen of Peace, Hewitt, and St. Francis,
Haskell. His last assignment before retiring to St. Anthony in Butler in 2003
was at St. Francis Parish, New York City.
50th Anniversary
Franciscan Father Christian F. Camadella
Franciscan
Father Christian F. Camadella, a native of Endicott, N.Y., was ordained in
Washington on June 11, 1956 after completing his studies at St. Bonaventure
University. He served in World War II in the Army Air Corps. He entered the
Franciscans in 1950; His priestly assignments included Boston; Buffalo, N.Y.;
and Loudonville, N.Y. He received a master's degree in anthropology from the
University of Colorado in 1969. He was a vicar and professor at Metropolitan
State College, Denver, from 1970 to1980. He later served in St. Francis, N.Y.;
St. Anthony Shrine, Boston; Our Lady of Holy Angels, Little Falls; Beach Haven;
and St. Francis, N.Y. He has served at St. Bonaventure Parish, Paterson, since
2001 where he is senior associate friar and chaplain to the Secular Franciscans.
Franciscan Father Edward J. Donohue
Franciscan Father
Edward J. Donohue, a resident of St. Anthony Friary, Butler, since 2005, is a
native of Jersey City and a graduate of St. Peter's College. He entered the
Franciscan Friars of Holy Name Province at St. Bonaventure Monastery, Paterson,
in 1951. His priestly studies were at St. Anthony Monastery, Butler, and Holy
Name College, Washington. He was ordained June 11, 1956. His priestly
assignments included Boston, West Milford, Garfield, Elmwood Park, Rochelle
Park, and Wood-Ridge as well as Holy Name College, Washington. His last
assignment before retiring to St. Anthony in Butler in 2005 was at St. Joseph,
East Rutherford.
Msgr. George A. Dudak
Msgr. George A. Dudak was pastor of
Our Lady of the Mountain Parish, Schooleys Mountain, for 30 years until he
retired in 1999 from active ministry. He was ordained by Bishop James A. McNulty
on May 26, 1956. When Msgr. Dudak came as pastor at Our Lady of the Mountain
Parish in 1969, he had recently returned from five years of service as one of
two volunteer missionary priests in the former diocesan mission in Ica, Peru.
Msgr. Dudak attended the former Bayley-Ellard High School, Madison, and was
graduated from St. Charles High School, Catonsville Md., and of Seton Hall
University. He completed his priestly studies at the former Immaculate
Conception Seminary, Darlington. His first assignment was as parochial vicar at
Our Lady of Mercy, Whippany, for two years, followed by six years at St. George
Parish, Paterson. He later served at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Paterson. On
the diocesan level, he has served as chairman of development commission and as a
member of the priests' personnel board. He currently serves as part-time
parochial vicar at Resurrection Parish, Randolph.
Msgr. Joseph L. Ferrito
Msgr. Joseph L. Ferrito, a
Paterson native, was ordained May 26, 1956 at St. John Cathedral, Paterson by
Bishop James McNulty. His first Mass was at his home parish of St. Michael,
Paterson on May 27, 1956. His first assignment was as assistant pastor of St.
Vincent Martyr, Madison. He remained at the parish for seven years, although he
was administrator of St. James, Montague, for a year during that period. Msgr.
Ferrito's next assignment was as chaplain of St. Mary Hospital, Passaic. After
that he served as assistant pastor at St. Michael's, Netcong, and St. Therese
and St. Mary's, both in Paterson. In 1967, he was named pastor of St. Michael's,
Paterson. After four years, he was sent to become pastor of St. Vincent de Paul,
Stirling. In July 1979, he was assigned to St. Pius X, Montville, where he was
pastor until his retirement in 1996. Currently, Msgr. Ferrito resides in
Waretown.
Franciscan Father Theodore F. Lehr
Franciscan Father
Theodore F. Lehr is a native of Elmhurst, N.Y. and was ordained on Sept. 8, 1956
in Washington. His priestly studies were at St. Joseph Seminary, Callicoon,
N.Y.; St. Stephen College, Croghan, N.Y.; St. Anthony Monastery, Butler; and
Holy Name College, Washington. His served in the military as chaplain from 1963
to 1968. His priestly assignments include: St. Francis, New York City; Sacred
Heart, Rochelle Park; St. Joseph, West Milford; and St. Leo, Elmwood Park as
well as in Boston, Wood-Ridge, Ringwood, Brookline, Mass., and Providence, R.I.
He retired in 2005 and currently resides at St. Anthony Friary, Butler.
Trinitarian Father Campion Murphy
Trinitarian Father
Campion Murphy, a native of Rockville Centre, N.Y., was ordained May 31, 1956
after completing his studies at Holy Trinity Seminary in Silver Spring, Md., and
Winchester, Va. He entered the Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity in
1951. His first assignment was teaching at St. Joseph Preparatory Seminary in
Alabama. He also taught at the University of Notre Dame Indiana and the Father
Judge Seminary, Va. He served as chaplain for Cleveland Clinic Hospital in Ohio.
He has resided at St. Joseph Shrine, Stirling, since 1989.
Msgr. James H. Murray
Msgr. James H. Murray, pastor of
St. Mary's, Denville since 1971, studied for the priesthood at the former
Immaculate Conception Seminary, Darlington, and was ordained on May 26, 1956 in
St. John Cathedral, Paterson. Following his ordination, his first assignment was
as parochial vicar at St. John Cathedral. He worked with the scouts and junior
CYO on parish and diocesan levels. He also fostered the Mount St. Joseph Home
annual fund drive, created the Knights of St. John and was moderator of the St.
John Cathedral drama club. In 1966, he served as administrator of St. Brendan
Parish, Clifton, and then served as director of his alma mater, the former
Bayley-Ellard High School in Madison, between 1967 and 1971. He then became
pastor of St. Mary's. He was named a monsignor by Pope John Paul II in 1989.
Franciscan Father Rayner F. Williams
Franciscan Father
Rayner F. Williams, a native of Jessup, Pa., was ordained in Washington on June
11, 1956. He attended for his priestly and college studies St. Joseph Seminary,
Callicoon, N.Y.; St. Bonaventure University; Siena College; St. Stephen,
Croghan, N.Y.; St. Anthony Monastery, Butler; and the University of Notre Dame,
Indiana. He received a master's degree in economics from Notre Dame. He entered
the Franciscans in 1950 at St. Bonaventure Monastery, Paterson, and his priestly
assignments included Siena College, Loudonville, N.Y., the University of Notre
Dame, and St. Francis, New York City. He has served in the Office of Development
at St. Anthony Friary, Butler, since 2005.
Salesian Father Vincent V.A. Zuliani
Salesian Father
Vincent V.A. Zuliani, a native of Udine, Italy, came to this country in 1949 and
was assigned to the former Don Bosco College, Newton, where he was a professor
of philosophy and classical languages. In 1952, he returned to Italy to complete
his theological studies in preparation for his priesthood. He received a degree
in theology from the Salesian Pontifical University in Turin, where he was
ordained by Cardinal Maurilius Fossati, on July 1, 1956, in the Basilica of Mary
Help of Christians. Upon his return to the U.S., Father Zuliani went back to Don
Bosco College, where he continued his teaching career. He also obtained a
master's degree in classical languages from Fordham University. For eight years
he was also director of the adult vocation program. During the weekends, he
assisted at Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Ss. Cyril and Methodius, both in
Boonton, and St. Thomas More, Convent Station. In July 1975, Father Zuliani was
appointed director of the former Don Bosco Technical High School, Paterson. He
has also served in Goshen, N.Y., Marrero, La.; Ramsey; Boston; Port Chester,
N.Y.; and Birmingham, Ala., He currently resides in the Salesians of Don Bosco
Provincial Residence, New Rochelle, N.Y.
40th Anniversary
Franciscan Father John W. Alderson
Franciscan Father John
W. Alderson, a parochial vicar of St. Mary Parish, Pompton Lakes, since 2005,
was ordained on March 5, 1966. For his priestly studies, he attended St.
Bonaventure University, and Holy Name College Washington. His assignments
included: St. Anthony Shrine, Boston; Timon High School, Buffalo, N.Y., St.
Patrick, Buffalo, N.Y., St. Joseph, West Milford, St. Rita, Buffalo, N.Y., St.
Anne, Fair Lawn.
Msgr. John J. Carroll
Msgr. John J. Carroll, a native of
Hawthorne, was ordained on May 28, 1966 by Bishop Casey. His first assignment
was as assistant pastor at St. John Cathedral, Paterson. He was named assistant
superintendent of schools in 1968 and then served as superintendent from 1972 to
1981. Msgr. Carroll was a member of the first diocesan Priests Senate and has
served as chairman of the diocesan Music Commission, moderator of the Pontifical
Choir, member of the Personnel Board, chaplain of the Knights of Columbus
Paterson Council 240, a judge of the diocesan Tribunal and associate pastor of
Our Lady of Pompeii, Paterson. He was elevated to monsignor in 1989. He holds
master's and doctorate degrees in education from Fordham University. He served
for 25 years as pastor of St. Patrick Parish, Chatham, and he is currently
pastor of Our Lady of Magnificat, Kinnelon, where he has served since 1991.
Father Joseph M. Casey
Father Joseph M. Casey, a native
of Morristown, studied for the priesthood at the former Immaculate Conception
Seminary, Darlington. He was ordained on May 28, 1966 at St. John Cathedral,
Paterson, by Bishop Casey. Father Casey had served as parochial vicar at St.
Christopher's, Parsippany, and St. Jude's, Hopatcong. He also served on the
faculty at Delbarton School, Morristown; as diocesan coordinator of campus
ministry; and as a faculty member, campus chaplain and director of volunteers at
Fairleigh Dickinson University's Florham-Madison campus. He is a former chaplain
at Morristown Memorial Hospital and Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital.
Currently, he is in residence at Assumption Parish, Morristown.
Benedictine Father Richard Cronin
Benedictine Father
Richard Cronin, a teacher at Delbarton School in Morristown since 1982, was
ordained in 1966. The following year, he received his master's degree in history
from Boston College. His first assignment was as a teacher and administrator at
Bishop Grimes High School, East Syracuse, N.Y. from 1966 to 1982. In 1984, he
professed solemn vows in the Order of St. Benedict at St. Mary's Abbey,
Morristown. He has served as a weekend assistant at St. Thomas More Parish,
Convent Station, since 1982 and currently resides at St. Mary's Abbey,
Morristown.
Franciscan Father John J. Kull
Franciscan Father John J.
Kull, a native of Lackawanna, N.Y., was ordained on March 3, 1966. For his
priestly and college studies, he attended St. Joseph Seminary, Callicoon, N.Y.,
St. Francis College, Rye Beach, N.H. and Holy Name College Washington. His
served in New Bedford, Mass., Elmwood Park and Fair Lawn. He also served in the
Franciscan missions in Bolivia. He currently resides at St. Anthony's, Butler.
Father Richard H. Oliveri
Father Richard H. Oliveri, who
retired from active ministry in 2003 after 12 years as pastor of St. Mary
Parish, Dover, studied for the priesthood at the former Immaculate Conception
Seminary, Darlington. He was ordained by Bishop Lawrence Casey on May 28, 1966.
Father Oliveri's early parish assignments were at St. Margaret, Morristown, and
Our Lady of Lourdes, Paterson. He served for nine years as associate director of
the diocesan Department of Special Education. He also served as parochial vicar
at St. Jude Parish, Hopatcong. After his 1990 election by fellow diocesan
priests, he also served on the Presbyteral Council, representing Sussex County.
Currently, he is in residence Our Lady of Good Counsel, Pompton Plains.
Msgr. Remigio G. Rocco
Msgr. Remigio G. Rocco, a native
of Morristown, was graduated from Seton Hall University, South Orange. He
completed his studies for the priesthood at the former Immaculate Conception
Seminary, Darlington, and was ordained by Bishop Casey on May 28, 1966.
Following his first assignment, as parochial vicar at St. Virgil Parish, Morris
Plains, he served as chaplain at Villa Walsh Academy, Morristown, and as
parochial vicar at Blessed Sacrament Parish, Paterson; St. Pius X Parish,
Montville; and Holy Family Parish, Florham Park. In 1982, he was named pastor of
Blessed Sacrament Parish where he remained until he was assigned in 1990 as
pastor of St. Francis Parish, where he currently serves. He was named a
monsignor on Oct. 10, 1993 by Pope John Paul II.
Father Joseph Ryan
Father Joseph Ryan, pastor of Our Lady
of the Lake Parish, Mount Arlington, since 1994, is a native of Ireland. He
studied at St. Patrick's College, Thurles, Ireland and was ordained on June 12,
1966. His first assignment upon arriving in the U.S. was as associate pastor of
Immaculate Heart of Mary, Wayne. He was transferred to the faculty of Pope John
XXIII High School, Sparta, in 1969 and remained there until he was appointed
associate director of the diocesan Family Life Bureau in 1978. Two years later
he returned to the Pope John faculty and was assigned as part-time parochial
vicar at St. Monica Parish, Sussex. He was named pastor of St. Monica's on Oct.
1, 1985 and remained there until Sept. 10, 1990 when he became pastor of St.
Anthony, Hawthorne. In 1993, he was named parochial vicar for the parishes of
St. James, Montague and St. Thomas, Sandyston.
Discalced Carmelite Father Bernardo

Discalced Carmelite Father Bernardo
Velasquez-Araque, chaplain of Passaic Beth Israel Hospital, Passaic, is a native
of Medellin, Colombia. For his college and seminary studies, he studied at
Carmelite College in Sonson and Bogota, both in Colombia. He was ordained to the
priesthood in Medellin, Colombia on Nov. 20, 1966. He has a master's degree from
Carmelite University, Rome, Italy. In Colombia, he was ecclesiastical
administrator of the Carmelite Province and director of the Carmelite Seminary,
Medellin. His priestly assignments also included: Carmelite Monastery, Palmira,
Colombia, and Carmelite Monastery, Jerusalem as well as a parish priest in
Sonson and Medellin both in Colombia. Father Velasquez-Araque is also a trained
musician. He plays piano, pipe organ and has studied voice. He has made
recordings of Gregorian chants and carols with Sonolux of Colombia. He came to
the U.S. in 2003 and he has served as part-time parochial vicar at St. Anthony
Parish, Passaic, where he currently resides, part-time chaplain at St. Joseph's
Wayne Hospital and Preakness Healthcare Center, both in Wayne.
Father John H. Weis
Father John H. Weis, a native of
Jersey City, has served in Michigan since 1989. For his college and seminary
studies, he attended Seton Hall University, South Orange, and the former
Immaculate Conception Seminary, Darlington. He also holds a master's degree in
sociology from the New School for Social Research, N.Y. He was ordained on May
28, 1966 by Bishop Casey in St. John Cathedral, Paterson. His first assignment
after ordination was as parochial vicar at Holy Trinity Parish, Passaic. He
taught for several years at the former Pope Pius XII High School, also in
Passaic, and was chaplain at Beth Israel Hospital there. Father Weis also served
as chairman of the Office of Economic Opportunity in Passaic. Later, he was
assistant pastor at St. Joseph's, Newton, and St. Jude's, Hopatcong. He also was
pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes, Paterson. He also served at St. Gerard's,
Paterson. In 1973, he was appointed coordinator of the housing department of the
Diocesan Catholic Family and Community Services. Father Weis was commissioned as
a lieutenant in the Navy in 1979 and went on active duty in 1989. His
assignments as chaplain have included stints on the USS Saratoga and USS
Forrestall. He also served as a Marine Corps chaplain in Camp Leueune, N.C.
25th Anniversary
Father John Andrew Connell
Father John Andrew Connell,
pastor of Resurrection Parish, Randolph, entered the novitiate of the Christian
Brothers in 1956. He professed in 1957. He completed undergraduate studies at
the Catholic University, Washington where he was graduated magna cum laude in
1961. He received a master's degree in history at Manhattan College in 1966 and
completed a graduate program at Rhode Island College in counseling. He completed
his priesthood studies and was ordained a priest by Bishop Rodimer on Nov. 21,
1981. Father Connell's first assignment was as parochial vicar at St.
Christopher's, Parsippany. He later served at Annunciation Parish, Wayne, and in
1993, he became pastor of St. Virgil, Morris Plains. He also served as temporary
administrator for Blessed Kateri, Sparta. Father Connell has served on the
Ministry to Priests team and has been a spiritual adviser of the English
Cursillo movement. He has been pastor at Resurrection since 2001.
Msgr. John Hart
Msgr. John Hart, a native of Brooklyn, is
a graduate of the former Neumann Prep, Wayne. He attended the college seminary
at Seton Hall University and received a bachelor's degree in French. He
completed his priesthood studies at the former Immaculate Conception Seminary,
Darlington, and earned a master's degree in theology with a concentration in
Sacred Scripture. Msgr. Hart was ordained on May 9, 1981 in Annunciation Church,
Wayne. His first assignment as a priest was as parochial vicar at Corpus Christi
Parish, Chatham Township. In 1988, he began advanced studies in canon law at St.
Paul University, Ottawa, Canada, where he earned his licentiate in canon law in
1990. Msgr. Hart was named Bishop Rodimer's priest secretary and master of
ceremonies in 1990 and also a weekend assistant at St. Christopher Parish,
Parsippany. Msgr. Hart has served on the diocesan Tribunal since 1987. He was
named adjutant judicial vicar in 1995. He was named to his current position as
pastor of St. Cecilia Parish, Rockaway, and administrator of Sacred Heart,
Rockaway, in 1996. In 1999, he was named diocesan chancellor by Bishop Frank
Rodimer and served until 2005. He was named a monsignor in June 2003 by Pope
John Paul II.
Msgr. George F. Hundt
Msgr. George F. Hundt, pastor of
St. Anthony Parish, Hawthorne, since 2002, was graduated from Wayne Valley High
School and studied three years with the Xaverian Missionary Fathers. He received
a bachelor's degree in religious studies from Montclair State University before
completing his preparation for the priesthood at St. Mary Seminary, Baltimore,
where here received a master's degree in sacred theology. A native of Wayne,
Msgr. Hundt was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Rodimer on May 28, 1981 in
St. Philip Church, Clifton. His first assignment was as parochial vicar of St.
Peter the Apostle Parish, Parsippany, until 1986, when he left to pursue studies
in canon law at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome. He is a former
priest-secretary to Bishop Rodimer and served as diocesan vice chancellor from
1987 to 1994. He later served at his home parish of Our Lady of the Valley,
Wayne, first as part-time parochial vicar while he was vice chancellor and later
as full-time parochial vicar there. Father Hundt, who has also been a member of
the diocese's Presbyteral Council and its Education Council and serves as one of
the defenders of the bond on diocesan Tribunal, was appointed by Bishop Rodimer
as diocesan director of clergy personnel in April 2000. He was pastor of St.
Gerard Majella Parish, Paterson (1995-2002). He was named a monsignor by Pope
John Paul II in 2003. He is currently director of the diocesan Clergy Personnel
office.
