St. Joseph School is a Catholic school offering a top-quality education from pre-K4 through eighth grade. The school is located adjacent to the Church of St. Joseph in the heart of historic Mendham Borough in Morris County, New Jersey.

St. Joseph School opened in 1963 with grades one through four under the direction of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception. In 1971, control of the school was transferred to the Sisters of Christian Charity. Although St. Joseph School is now staffed by a lay principal and teachers, the Sisters of Christian Charity maintain a close relationship with the school.

St. Joseph School is committed to partnering with parents in the education of their most precious gifts – their children. Education of the whole child – spiritually, academically, emotionally, socially, and physically - is of primary importance to the mission of our school. This commitment can be fulfilled only within an environment that is warm, positive, and supportive to the child.

First and foremost, we are a Catholic School. Our vision and purpose flow from the Gospel message of faith, hope, and love. Teaching this message permeates our curriculum. Our students receive a value-based education where morals are stressed and taught throughout the day in every classroom. Praying together each day is a gift that we treasure. Through this Christ-centered environment, our social conscience is heightened enabling our students to be actively engaged in service and community projects. We understand the importance of giving back because we have been given so much.

At St. Joseph School, we have one class of every grade from Pre-K4 to grade 8. This provides us with a small nurturing environment where children are encouraged and cared for in a special way to reach their potential. St. Joseph School provides a supportive and faith-filled setting for its students to grow and learn.

Strong academics are of prime importance to the mission of our school. Our faculty is committed to professional development. All teachers are well trained in subject matter and methodologies. Staff development is a crucial part of improving the educational program, and teachers have taken advantage of a wide variety of opportunities to enhance their skills. They have a keen understanding about the different learning styles of our children and are dedicated to helping each child succeed.

St. Joseph School is fortunate to have an extremely qualified and dedicated staff. The faculty consists of ten full-time teachers, a library/media specialist, and a nurse. All full time teachers are fully certified. Part-time staff includes a guidance counselor, two additional mathematics teachers, a computer science, art, music, physical education and Spanish teachers, and pre-K4 and kindergarten assistants. Additionally, a part-time speech teacher and a supplemental teacher are employed to instruct classified students.

In addition, our state-of-the-art facilities include a cafeteria/multi-purpose room, science lab, library/media center, and computer lab. In the computer lab, thirty computers are connected to a network that permits Internet access. All classrooms, including the library and computer lab, are equipped with SMART Board™ interactive whiteboards and Audio Enhancement Systems. These technological advances help to create an ideal learning environment.

St. Joseph School follows the curriculum guidelines outlined by the Diocese of Paterson and based on the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. Technology applications are integrated throughout the curriculum. In addition, field trips are enjoyed by students throughout the year. Field trips are correlated to the curriculum and enhance the course of study by providing enrichment experiences outside the classroom. Some examples include various historical and cultural sites, museums, and plays.

St. Joseph School is blessed by the commitment of the parents to support the school’s mission. The vast majority of parents volunteer in a long list of activities to provide assistance to the staff and to enhance the educational program. Volunteers can be found on a daily basis in the school. They prepare parent communication folders, volunteer in the cafeteria and on the playground, make presentations in the class, and assist teachers with spiritual and academic projects. In addition, volunteers assist with circulation, book selection, and story reading in the library, arrange and chaperone trips, coach sports, direct plays, and engage in several fund-raising activities, including our highly successful annual fall golf outing and the gala spring auction.

St. Joseph School has received numerous academic achievements and distinctions, including  designation as a “Star School” by the Paterson Diocese. Graduates from St. Joseph School go on to a variety of competitive Catholic, private and public secondary schools in the area and are prepared for a lifetime of success and service to the community and the Catholic Church
