|Mission: The mission of St. Mary’s Prep is to support, motivate and prepare our students spiritually, academically and socially.
St. Mary’s Prep participates in a key partnership with the family to educate the whole child, preparing each for a full life in the image and likeness of Jesus Christ, through the implementation of Our Mission.
Through a tangible academic curriculum and an intangible curriculum of values, we strive not only to teach the academics but, also, the other three R’s: respect, responsibility and religion.
St. Mary’s Prep’s teachers are caring, supporting role models who carry out the philosophy of educating the child as a complete whole. In our ministry as educators, we are called to serve on an academic, spiritual and social level. Faculty members treat each other with respect, courtesy, tolerance and empathy. Recognizing each others talents, skills and ideas on a personal as well as a professional level, we support and encourage one another to grow.
As partners in education, we strive to assist the child through the educational process. The teachers demonstrate sound social judgment, professionalism and ethical behavior in their various forms of communication. Our goal is to achieve a mutually supportive relationship between the school and the family for the benefit of the child. Extending upon our ministry to teach as Jesus did, our teachers’ vocational commitment goes beyond the traditional teacher/school relationship. The staff regularly extends themselves beyond contractual responsibilities. As advocates for Christian education, the teachers demonstrate a high level of professionalism and leadership.
St. Mary’s Prep curriculum meets and exceeds all of the NJ core curriculum standards.
History: It all began on August 17, 1947, when two Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother started a catechetical school at St. Mary’s Parish in Denville, New Jersey. They taught religious education classes, trained altar servers and conducted the girls’ choir. This work continued until the school and convent were built in 1953. St. Mary’s School opened its doors on September 22, 1954. Initially, the school housed students in grades kindergarten through 4th grade and was taught by two sisters. The year 1959 marked the first eighth grade graduation of 39 students. The same year, 66 students graduated from the kindergarten program and the total school enrolment was 535 students. Msgr. John Furman requested 5 acres of land from the town of Denville for an expansion of the school. Ground was broken for the second school building in October of 1962 and in 1963 the new school building opened. The new building, referred to as Building # 2, housed grades 5-8.
St. Mary’s Prep Pre-School program began in 1977. In 1979, building # 2 was sold to the town of Denville. The proceeds of the sale were used to build an eight room addition to the original building, thus making it possible for all students to attend school in the same building. St. Mary’s School started its full-day kindergarten program and the expanded pre-school program in 1992. In 2005, St. Mary’s School officially changed its name to St. Mary’s Prep.
