St. Therese School was founded to promote learning, to enhance a faith community and prepare students for a changing world. This mission statement is the essence of the school. We are proud of the work we are accomplishing here at St. Therese and know that our students are well prepared to compete in a global society.

Bishop James J. Navagh laid the cornerstone for St. Therese School on June 2, 1963 with the school officially opening that September. Grades one through four were accommodated the first year with an enrollment of approximately 180 students. Each year after a new class was added until grades one through eight were enrolled. The school was staffed by the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, New York.

St. Therese School prospered for ten years under the Dominican leadership and for fifteen years under the guidance of the Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco. During the early years of the Salesian administration a half-day kindergarten was added.

By 1988, St. Therese School was staffed entirely by lay teachers with a religious principal, Sr. Jean Makovsky of the School Sisters of St. Francis.

In September of 1990 our school family was led by Sr. Jean Cordis Mangin, a Sister of Charity of St. Elizabeth.

From 1992 until 2010, Sr. Mary Elizabeth Davies, also a Sister of Charity, has served as principal of St. Therese School. In 1994, a full day kindergarten and an after school care program for grades Kindergarten through grade five were opened.

September 8, 1997 brought a great change to the school as it opened its doors to Pre-Kindergarten three and four year olds. In addition, the library and computer rooms were expanded and opened that September.

On July 1, 2010, Mrs. Lisa Hirschfeld was appointed principal. She is the school’s first lay principal. Prior to being named principal Mrs. Hirschfeld served as teacher in grades seven and eight for nine years as well as vice principal for two years.

Although physical changes have taken place at the school we are proud of an exemplary program which was developed and in place for seven years that developed an awareness and tolerance of people from all over the world. Students studied countries of all continents and their culture and shared experiences through artwork, presentations, and inviting speakers from various cultures to make students aware of our differences and similarities. As a result of this program, on June 12, 2008, our school received its “Star School” award from the Diocese of Paterson. This acknowledges St. Therese as a school that promotes high student achievement and has an identifiable specialization which addresses the educational services and needs of the students. Outstanding performance is measured in terms of student results and school accomplishments and there are collaborative efforts with parents, parish and community.

In order to provide a well-rounded program at our school we offer a number of after school clubs that our children in grades three through eight may join. These clubs include: St. Therese Service Club, Forensics Club, Brain Bowl Club, Armada Blanca Club, Media Club, Drama Club, Fun With Food and Yearbook Club. We are blessed to have many of our parents in charge of these clubs with a teacher as moderator.

Parents are a huge part of our success at St. Therese. They generously volunteer for lunch duty, library help, our uniform exchange program, as room parents and various fundraising activities such as our annual golf outing, Tricky Tray, Scholastic Book Fair. Of course, all parents who volunteer have completed all parts of the Protecting God’s Children program.

With many years of tradition behind us we look forward to the future with its challenges and rewards, confident that we will continue to prosper and fulfill our mission as educators of the children of God.
